MoQ
Media Over QUIC (MoQ) is redefining what’s possible in live streaming, and Vindral is leading that evolution. Fully integrated into Vindral Live, our MoQ implementation expands the platform’s feature set, adding new levels of flexibility, reliability, and workflow versatility to the proven ultra-low latency technology trusted worldwide.
What is Media over QUIC?
MoQ is an emerging IETF standard built on the QUIC transport layer. It’s designed to overcome limitations of older HTTP-based delivery by reducing latency, removing head-of-line blocking, and improving packet loss handling. The result: smoother, more efficient, and more scalable media delivery even under unstable network conditions.
MoQ is seamlessly integrated into Vindral Live, supporting everything from synchronized viewing and interactive experiences to global broadcast scale. It builds on Vindral’s existing strengths, enhancing performance without changing what already works.
Why traditional protocols fall short
- Latency and overhead – HLS and similar protocols add several seconds of delay, breaking making real-time engagement.
- Unstable networks – Packet loss and jitter disrupt the viewing experience.
- Connection instability – Older protocols often restart or break streams when network conditions change.
- Feature limitations – Older formats struggle with modern requirements such as subtitles, multiple audio tracks, and advanced codecs like AV1.
How Media Over QUIC works
- QUIC foundation – Faster connection setup, multiplexing without blocking, and advanced congestion control improve performance under all network conditions.
- Media layer – Vindral’s MoQ adds a real-time publish-subscribe layer for media objects, supporting synchronized streams and codec flexibility.
- Workflow integration – Vindral’s implementation bridges MoQ with established delivery paths such as RTMP, MPEG-TS, SDI, and our proprietary ULL stack, ensuring compatibility and optimal performance across diverse workflows.
Benefits of Vindral’s MoQ integration
- Reduced latency – Sub-second delivery globally, even over unstable networks.
- Seamless switching – Viewers can move between channels without interruptions or buffering.
- Scalable sync – Maintains precise timing across all viewers, ensuring everyone sees the same live moment.
- Flexible architecture – Vindral’s MoQ-based design interoperates with established formats such as SDI, MPEG-TS, RTMP, and SRT, ensuring adaptability across complex broadcast and streaming workflows.
- Comprehensive feature set – Beyond MoQ itself, Vindral provides full support for DRM, AV1, multi-track audio, subtitles, and adaptive bitrate control. These are features not yet available in most MoQ implementations. This makes Vindral’s MoQ integration not just standards-compliant, but production-ready.
- Future-ready standard – Full end-to-end MoQ support, ready for interoperability as the protocol evolves.
Built for broadcasters and infrastructure teams
Vindral’s MoQ integration isn’t limited to cloud delivery via Vindral LiveCloud, it’s available through Vindral LiveEngine, our self-hosted deployment option trusted by leading broadcasters and infrascalers worldwide.
With LiveEngine, organizations can run Vindral’s MoQ-enabled stack within their own infrastructure, combining the control of on-prem or hybrid environments with the innovation of the latest real-time delivery standard.
This makes Vindral the only MoQ implementation that’s both production-ready and infrastructure-ready, enabling full-featured deployments across ingest, distribution, and playback without reliance on external CDNs or SaaS limitations.
Key advantages include:
- Self-hosted or hybrid deployment – Deploy Vindral LiveEngine within existing infrastructure or alongside Vindral LiveCloud.
- Infrastructure-grade performance – Proven in large-scale environments operated by broadcasters and telcos.
- Full MoQ compatibility – End-to-end MoQ support integrated into the same workflow that powers Vindral Live.
- Operational flexibility – Seamless integration with existing pipelines for ingest, transcoding, redundancy, and monitoring.
Whether embedded in an established broadcast network or integrated into a global streaming architecture, Vindral LiveEngine provides the same ultra-low latency performance, synchronization precision, and workflow interoperability that define Vindral Live.
Built on proven technology
Vindral has long set the benchmark for ultra-low latency streaming. With MoQ, we’re extending that benchmark, applying our experience in synchronization, adaptive delivery, and real-time performance to a new standard designed for the future of media transport.
Unlike early-stage MoQ implementations, Vindral’s approach is complete and deployable today. Our platform combines the flexibility of MoQ with the full feature set required in real-world production environments, including DRM, AV1, subtitles, multi-audio, analytics, and hybrid ingest paths.
This ensures our customers gain all the advantages of the MoQ standard without losing the capabilities they depend on. Vindral’s MoQ integration is a natural evolution of a mature, proven ecosystem, extending what already works, not reinventing it.
