Live streaming of sports has traditionally been a high-latency experience, with no guaranteed synchronization between viewers. RTHK tackled this challenge by using Mediatech’s live streaming system, which is powered by Vindral. Mediatech and Vindral have been partners since 2020, delivering services in horse racing, community streaming, and more recently, sports, in South East Asia. Through this collaboration, RTHK was able to provide ultra-low latency, synchronized streaming of the Paris Olympics 2024, keeping viewers in restaurants and pubs across Hong Kong at the same point in the action.

One well-known issue with live sports online is that latencies differ between viewers. This solution eliminates that problem, regardless of what platform the viewer uses to connect. Since the different venues showing the Olympics are on varying network conditions, and using different devices, Vindral’s consistent delivery across the fragmented landscape was a requirement.
